Kapoor, Anish

Kapoor, Anish
   b. 1954
   Sculptor
Winner of the Turner Prize in 1991, Anish Kapoor is best known for his biomorphic and geometric, sculpted shapes which he covers in brightly coloured pigments and displays in groups, developing relationships between each object which often suggest landscapes. Inspired by the mounds of intensely coloured powders which he saw on display in India, the artist tries to evoke something of his cultural heritage. The primary colours which he uses are often imbued with a symbolism which relates to Indian art and religion, while the shapes often imply fertility. He exhibited in the British Pavilion at the 1990 Venice Biennale, and an exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in 1998 saw Kapoor experimenting with the representation of absence.
